The Brand Gap – Distance Between Strategy & Creativity

Update: After going through the presentation I kind of had a few random thoughts that I needed to put down, please excuse me if my ramblings don’t make sense.

The part of this presentation that really stood out for me was collaboration. The presentation illustrates three methods of collaboration:

  1. One Stop Shop
  2. The Brand Agency
  3. Intergrated Marketing Team

I have no idea which is the best one to use, all I know is that neither of them control the ownership of you brand. Your customers own your brand. Like the presentation says, “..brands are defined by individuals, not companies, markets, or publics”. So here is where Social Media comes into play. How about individuals building your brand?

It’s already happening, those who are brand enthusiasts will talk about a brand all the time. Blogs are one of the many mediums that brand enthusiasts use to talk about brands they love. A company that has millions of bloggers talking about it world wide is Apple. They hardly needed to advertise the iPhone online because thousands upon thousands of bloggers did it for them.

So whats the best way to build a great brand? Build a truly great product and listen to your customers. The rest will take care of itself.

The Good Die Young

Early this morning I woke up to an sms telling me yet another friend of mine passed away in the early hours of the morning. In the last 2 weeks I have lost 3 friends in car accidents. I went to school with them, I did sport with them, I partied with them. I took their presence for granted. They are no longer here with us.

Sjava
Bafweto, you were a legend. On the track and on the soccer field. I’ll never forget your Casanova charm, the determination and sportsmanship you displayed at all times. You were a well mannered and upstanding young lad. Rest In Peace.

Neil
My boy, another legend. Always a quiet guy, minding your own. You lived life your way. I’ll never forget the amount of concentration you put into every shot when we played pool. A true gentleman. Rest In Peace.

Werner
Dude, a legend of funny! Never a dull moment around you. Loved by everybody, except the teachers. You were a rebel with a heart of gold. Rest In Peace.

You boys will be missed dearly by everyone. Our thoughts and prayers are will your families.

Non-Frequent Round-Up

As I am sure you have noticed, my bi-monthly round-ups have become some what more monthly and even less frequent. With so much going on lately I battle to find the time to post frequent round-ups, as well as quality posts. So apologies for the lack of quality around here lately. Over the next week things should start calming down and I will get back to bringing you quality content.

Cerebra & 27 Dinner
As some of you know I am know part of Cerebra. I am fortunate to be surrounded by some of South Africa’s top minds in the online industry. The 27 Dinner will be happening this Sunday, more details here. Look forward to seeing you all there.

Paul De Sousa & Kinetiq
Paul De Sousa, owner of Kinetiq, a friend of mine has started blogging again over the at The Times. He works with Colin Daniels, the one I envy. He has a great introductory post to Google’s PageRank and he will be attending the 27 Dinner.

Exams & Student Sale
Yip, during the course of May I have been writing a few exams through Unisa for my BComm. That has been keeping me pretty busy. Student Sale is actually being used, so I am over the moon about that. I have a few plans that are in motion for it and I hope they will all work out.

AmaTags & Link Blog
Last week sometime I released a plugin for Amatomu, Afrigator and Muti. Stii has done a great job of fixing it up and releasing a better version of AmaTags. This week I started a link blog which allows me to share interesting articles from my Google Reader. The widget is on the left hand side menu.

Well, I guess it’s time for to get back to studying and looking for sites to rant and rave about. If you know of or have any sites you would like me to take a look at then please feel free to contact me.

Disclaimer: I receive a number of requests daily to review sites, which I do not always choose to review. I however always keep an eye on these sites and when they warrant a review I review them. I love seeing new sites and services come about, so please keep sending them.

In Motion

I am busy moving Tyler Reed to a new server. Normal blogging and podcasting will resume on Monday. Thanks to all those who e-mailed me to let me know that my bandwidth has been exceeded. I was hoping to be on the new server already but I ran into an issue with one of the name servers.

Thanks for you support and patience. :)

Bi-Monthly Round-Up (April 15th)

I was very busy and completely forgot to post my round-up for the 31st of March, so I will include it all in this post. I haven’t been too busy. I have almost mastered the art of time management with the help of Ta-da Lists from the guys at 37 Signals.

Mike Stopforth & 27 Dinner
I finally met one of the men behind Afrigator, Mike Stopforth. We spoke some random crap, nothing of interest. I guess I can take this opportunity to thank him for lunch and an honorable mention.

I also met some of the faces behind a lot of South African blogs, read about that over here. The 27 Dinners are a must attend for all geeks, marketers, media persons and entrepreneurs.

IOL Technology and BizCommunity
I now contribute to IOL Technology and BizCommunity. This reminds me, I really need to finish off a few drafts for Global Voices, who recently re-designed their site.

Student Sale beta
Student Sale is currently going through a private beta testing phase and will be more than ready on the 1st of May. I am really getting excited about this, I have a lot planned for the site in the coming weeks and months. All will be revealed in due time.

My First Podcast
I finally did my first podcast. Thank you for all the positive feedback! All comments have been taken into account and there are big plans for the podcast, all will be revealed in the next episode. Once again, a very special thank you to Gregor for his help. And another thank you to Victoire for her compliments.

That is all I can remember, just a shout out to all the Rhodes University students who attended graduation. Congratulations to Vincent Maher who has become a father. Lastly thanks to Paul Stamatiou for hooking me up with my twitter status plugin (see right).

Take Care
Ciao
