Speaking Season – Upcoming Talks

It’s speaking season for me again, which is something I really enjoy. Those who know me well, know that I love talking. There is something about sharing knowledge with others that is rewarding to me. I have a bad habit of only preparing the night before, so here are the conferences that will be keeping me up until the early hours of the morning.

  • Kid & Teen Republic Conference
I’ll be speaking about engaging the youth through Social and Mobile Media. This conference is apparently “the” youth marketing conference, so I am really looking forward to it. The conference will run on 20 and 21 August 2008. You can get more information over here.
  • HDI Youth Marketeers – Summer School 08
I’ll be speaking about user generated content (UGC) and co-creation amongst the these new trends are shaping the way in which brands connect with and engage the youth. The conference will run on the 17th and 18th of September 2008. You can download the brochure over here.
  • Africa Media & Broadcasting Congress 2008
I’ll be the Chairperson (glorified MC on the 30th) for the mobile day at this conference. I am looking forward to this, as it will be my first Chairperson / MC slot. The conference is an international affair, and Matthew Buckland will be speaking too. You can find out more over here.

NMMC 08 – Engaging The Youth Through Social Media

Below is the presentation I did at the New Media Marketing Conference yesterday. The guys over at Zoopy did a marvelous job of live blogging my presentation, so you can read that over there. The video should be up in a few days and I will write more about the event and the other speakers.

Speaking Season

It seems that speaking season is upon me for the next couple of months. There are a number of industry events coming up at which I will be abusing the microphone, pushing PowerPoint to the extreme and hopefully sounding intelligent in front of some highly educated intellectuals.

I will be speaking at the following conferences:

  • 2nd Annual New Media Marketing – March 25 – 28, 2008
I will be talking about engaging the tech savvy youth, understanding them and their importance in building brand loyalty. There will a number of great speakers at the event, most of which are some of my friends and colleagues. To find out more about the conference, click here.
  • Technomadic Markets – April 16 – 18, 2008
I will be talking about Social Media Optimisation in 3 parts, theory, technical and practical. Technomadic Markets is a must attend for anyone who wishes to keep abreast of hours technology is affecting their market(s). The event is held at the UCT Graduate School of Business. To find out more about the course, click here.
  • Public Relations & Corporate Communications Summit – 20 – 21 May, 2008
I will be talking about the use of blogs and wikis for public relations and corporate communication. I haven’t been able to find anything online regarding this event, I will post more information once it becomes available. However, if you are interested you can contract Trisha.

27 Dinner – Geeks Without Power

Last night was the 15th 27 Dinner and it was one I will never forget. I went to pick up my colleague and buddy Devon and his girlfriend then headed off to Primi Piatti in Melrose Arch, the venue for this months 27 Dinner.

I was really excited to see the launch of Afrigator beta and meeting some new bloggers and followers on Twitter. The power went out at around 7pm and we were left without power for roughly an hour or two. It really put a damper on the evening as some people decided to leave. The candles lit up the venue while we had no power and the sound of plates and glasses breaking randomly was quite amusing.

It was really good to see some familiar faces. I spent most of the night at rather large table with Armand, Beverley, Simone, Devon, Eve and Charl, who posed with me in the photo below in our Cerebra schwag.

Me and Charl Norman

I had a really great chat to Stii about Afrigator and it was really great to finally meeting him (and Beverley). I felt like a mini-celebrity when Simone introduced me to quite a few people. I think thats the best part of the 27 Dinner, meeting new people.

I think the highlight of the evening was definitely the presentation by Justin about the new Afrigator beta. I will play with it during the week and comment on it, but I think they have made great progress and it is one amazing product. Thanks to Deshanta and the rest of Cerebra for organising the event, it was a real success. I can’t wait for the next one.

Facebook Developer Garage JHB

I just got back from the Facebook Developer Garage here in Johannesburg. The event was organised by Armand and Arno. The turn out was greater than I expected and I really enjoyed the presentations. I met quite a few new people tonight, I will link to those who’s blogs I know of below.

I gave a short case study of MXit Me, our first public Facebook application. The presentation is below, I hope you enjoy it.

Overall, I think tonight was a real success. I highly recommend that everyone attend the next one. You will gain invaluable insight into Facebook and social networking as a whole. I would like to thank everyone who came through and being a part of yet another community.

For those of you who are looking at creating a Facebook application that may be the “next big thing” then I really suggest you take a look at the competition that Mentez is currently running in South Africa.

It was great to finally meet those who I have met online and seen in the online space. Craig, Charl, Steven and the rest of the awesome people who joined us tonight, see you at the next one.
