3 Talk – Social Media & Facebook

The topic on 3 Talk with Noleen, today, was Social Media, blogging and Facebook. She had Arthur Goldstuck on her panel as well as a bunch of other names that I didn’t catch. The panel addressed a few issues that I would like to highlight and comment on.

Facebook Affecting Productiviy
Facebook affects productivity during work hours, period! However, it depends on the type of business you are in. The Times use Facebook and other Web 2.0 sites daily to stay abreast as South Africa’s top interactive news paper. Metropolitan Health Group is using Facebook for recruitment and many others for marketing and business. If I have to use myself as an example, my productivity is extremely high with Facebook because Facebook is my business. It all depends on your industry and what you’re looking to achieve with Facebook.

Facebook Affecting The Youth’s Social Lives
If anything, Facebook helps the social lives of youngsters. It allows us to organise events and invite hundreds of people within a few hours. We can communicate at anytime of the day or night and organise to meet up offline. We’re seeing a huge convergence of “geek” and “jock” culture amongst the youth all over the world. We’re growing up with technology and using it to our advantage. Don’t be jealous because the early adopters and youngsters use it so well.

Personally, I have not seen one case of “cyber-bullying” on Facebook. I am in contact with a large number of youngsters on a daily basis and have not heard nor seen anything of the sort. However, I do agree that someone being denied to become a person’s friend on Facebook or not invited to an event can be slightly damaging to ones self esteem. I also think that Facebook can be used effectively for stalking, that is why I suggest everyone check their privacy settings.

Confusing The Viewers
This wasn’t a topic, but something that I picked up on and it bugged me slightly. The gentleman from MyDigitalLife confused the viewers with way too many buzz words. Terms such as blog, plog, vlog and mlog. He then went on to say that we make them up as we go along. This makes me irate because it gives some people the impression that the industry is very confusing and unorganised. No offence to the gentleman, he knows what he is talking about, but why not just use terms like picture blog and mobile blog to make it easier. Everyone is already confused with the term blog, lets not make it even worse.

Your Say? The Conversation Continued..
I would like to hear your thoughts on the show and what was said or on what I have written. Maybe I have missed the boat a little or jumped to conclusions.

There were a few of us watching the show and passing comment via Twitter, namely Jason Bagley, Steven and myself.

Live Blogging – Ogilvy Verge

It seems that live blogging is starting to pick up around world. Live blogging is when a blog is specifically setup for a blogger(s) to blog about certain things as they happen, normally at an event. This allows people who aren’t attending the event to still keep up-to-date about the happenings of the event.

This morning I was reading Rohit’s blog. He is a part of the group of bloggers that will be covering the Ogilvy Verge event in the UK.

What I find really interesting about the event is that there will be a “Get Wired” desk which well help attendees sign-up to the Ogilvy Verge blog, Facebook, Twitter and the rest. What a great way to increase Web 2.0 participation.

Ogilvy seems to be catching on to blogging and Social Media really well. It goes to show there is an industry in Social Media. It isn’t going anywhere, it’s here to stay.

The Idea Virus

I just love the debate my post, Your Ideas, Others Cash In, has caused. I really enjoyed reading the opinions and insights of those who took the time to respond.

I am all for sharing and collaborating on ideas. We can’t all do everything ourselves. I also agree that ideas can stem from other influences and resources but that doesn’t mean an idea can’t be unique. Simply put, share and collaborate and give credit where credit is due.

Others opinions and insights:
Stefano Sessa – Your ideas are worthless!
Uno De Waal – Product: Sharing your ideas
Michael Chadbourne – Ownership of Ideas
Allan Kent – Ideas…
Nic Haralambous – Your idea, My idea, why’s everyone so paranoid?

So if you have an idea, hopefully these opinions and insights can help you and guide you. Share and collaborate or go it alone. The choice is yours. Below is a quote from Seth Godin, which you can find in his book IdeaVirus.

Why should we care? Why does it matter that ideas can instantly cross international boundaries, change discussions about politics, crime and justice or even get us to buy something? Because the currency of our future is ideas, and the ideavirus mechanism is the way those ideas propagate. And the science and art of creating ideaviruses and using them for profit is new and powerful. You don’t have to wait for an ideavirus to happen organically or accidentally. You can plan for it and optimize for it and make it happen.

Your Ideas, Others Cash In

Over the last few months I have been watching how people share and collaborate. I think the core of Social Media and Web 2.0 is about letting people share and collaborate. Helping each other improve on things and become more efficient.

So while we are all sharing ideas and so on, what is stopping other people from stealing our ideas and cashing in? Over the last few months I have met so many people and shared so many ideas with so many people. Sharing and collaborating is the new paradigm shift with the new generation of entrepreneurs. Rather work together and create something truly great.

However, I have seen some of my ideas starting to become a reality. Not by my creation but those I have spoken to. Whether it be by blogging or meeting with them. Now I am all for knowledge sharing and the greater cause. However while our new generation churns out ideas and new concepts those with money and resources make them happen quicker then we can.

We lose out on the money that can be generated from those ideas as well as the recognition for them. Now I am one who knows you can’t do everything yourself but it does grate me to see how people take our ideas and opinions and use them for their own benefit (when money is involved).

So my question is as this, as bloggers and digital citizens who express our opinions on issues and matters as well as share our knowledge with the world, is it worth sharing all that for free when other people capitalise on it?
