Last week Duncan broke the news about Vodacom’s MusicStation, a mobile music download service. MusicStation was developed by Omnifone and has signed up with other major service providers overseas.
The service is going to cost subscribers R25 per week (R100 per month) for access to a growing database of over 1 million songs. Subscribers will also not be charged for the data usage for downloading songs. However, the songs have DRM and will only play on the device it is downloaded onto. Songs will also become unplayable if the subscriber terminates his/her subscription.
The application looks really impressive and I will be sure to give it a go once it becomes available to more handsets. The only thing that does put me off is the DRM. I like my music to be portable and I want to be able to move it between my PC, iPod and phone. I am highly impressed with the application (from the video below) as the user interface looks very clean and easy to navigate. I will try get my hands on the appropriate hardware and software to try and do a full review of MusicStation, for now you can watch the video.

All the more reason to get an Iphone
but wait the Iphone does is not yet 3G capabale.
Does look quite cool, but damn, why the shit ad?
Pity about the DRM, I wonder if SA is going to finally feel it….
I won’t support it purely cause I can’t get it onto my ipod and I love my HTC but the sound quality isn’t that great, not for Metal and Rock definitely.
Garsen: Not that I know of.
Uno: Same here, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Steven: I share the same feelings
This is a good article. DRM is most commonly used by the entertainment industry (e.g. film and recording), it has found use in other situations as well. Many online music stores, such as Apple’s iTunes Store, as well as certain e-book publishers, have imposed DRM on their customers. It is a great. So i like it.
