MTN have launched NokNok, a mobile instant messaging service similar to MXit. It has been in development for sometime and this is an early release. NokNok also offers a PC client so users can stay connected when not on their mobile phones. As far as I know the service is for MTN subscribers only.
I am very skeptical when it comes to products competing against MXit in South Africa, as it has already captured a large market share. Switching from MXit to any other mobile IM service doesn’t make sense. However, I feel MTN will make use of NokNok to offer improved and value added services to its subscribers which could make it attractive.
Vodacom are also starting 2008 off with a few social mobile applications in its arsenal such as The Grid, MusicStation and Meep. I feel that there will be a lot more coming from both Vodacom and MTN in 2008 in terms of mobile applications and services. Exciting times ahead!
