Over the last few months I have been watching how people share and collaborate. I think the core of Social Media and Web 2.0 is about letting people share and collaborate. Helping each other improve on things and become more efficient.
So while we are all sharing ideas and so on, what is stopping other people from stealing our ideas and cashing in? Over the last few months I have met so many people and shared so many ideas with so many people. Sharing and collaborating is the new paradigm shift with the new generation of entrepreneurs. Rather work together and create something truly great.
However, I have seen some of my ideas starting to become a reality. Not by my creation but those I have spoken to. Whether it be by blogging or meeting with them. Now I am all for knowledge sharing and the greater cause. However while our new generation churns out ideas and new concepts those with money and resources make them happen quicker then we can.
We lose out on the money that can be generated from those ideas as well as the recognition for them. Now I am one who knows you can’t do everything yourself but it does grate me to see how people take our ideas and opinions and use them for their own benefit (when money is involved).
So my question is as this, as bloggers and digital citizens who express our opinions on issues and matters as well as share our knowledge with the world, is it worth sharing all that for free when other people capitalise on it?

I feel your pain!!!
Ok dude I’m going to take a hard-arsed approach here. First up, if you share an idea but aren’t quick enough to capitalise on it yourself and someone else does, tough luck. If you share it in ‘confidence’, fair enough, but it’s a free market where it’s survival of the quickest. Just ask Vincent Maher.
I have shared ideas in the open and watched them flutter away from me. That’s life. If someone does you in and has been unethical, the wheel turns and they will get their due.
But sharing is definitely worth it. If I’ve been successful at all it’s because of my willingness to share and collaborate. Or maybe I’m wrong, in which case I’d love to hear about it from those who feel that way.
So, my challenge to you bru: name some names dude!
Yeah Mike,
you need to selectively share ideas so that other people share their ideas with you. Sometimes you might even find that they’re building something similar to you
Stopforth says it all. I know the frustration too.
