Social Media is not about creating the next best web application. Social Media is about empowering people. Certain applications empower people in different ways.
- Blogging
Blogging gives people a voice on the internet. It allows them to express themselves online. Blogging isn’t just about trying to become a journalist or columnist. Not everyone who blogs wishes to capture a huge audience, a lot of people blog for niche communities or to keep old friends and family up-to-date. Do not under estimate the power of blogs. (read why) - Social Networking
Social Networking isn’t done solely through sites like Facebook. I have met quite a few people through blogging and through my blog(s). If you want to meet new people through blogging then start commenting on blogs that interest you, blogs that are in a similar field as your own. You could even e-mail people who comment on your blog. You never know how much someone you meet online can influence or benefit you. - Collaboration and Communication
Web applications from companies such as Google and 37signals have allowed people to connect from anywhere in the world. Create, modify and share information with ease. Communication improves collaboration, collaboration improves productivity. (something I can’t wait to see, Orgoo)
If you want your social application to succeed there is something you should do from the start, put the people first.
